How Do I Get to Downtown?
What happens to a city kid when he moves to the suburbs? I’m not a kid anymore and I don’t live in the city anymore, so as a suburbanite my inclination is to look for the main street or downtown. I learned quickly that in the “pure” suburbs, there is no downtown or uptown or Main Street or Broad Street or a business district or any area that I could identify as a central area.
Each town around the town I live in looks the same because there is no defining characteristic that distinguishes one from the other. In suburban sprawl, everything looks the same. At every traffic light, there is a bank, a strip maul, and probably a CVS or Rite Aid…all in a sea of housing developments.
it’s hard to stay “centered” in a place that has no center!
